I Can Feel The Ice Melting

The 14th album by Hoboken's bards of domestic bliss is founded on a quiet and mostly acoustic rustle of guitar and bass. When Ira Kaplan's shimmering electric enters, it's not to dominate the songs but to provide a spare, picked, lilting melody like the one that flits sadly above a swaying arrangement of the Hank Williams lament "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." Other artists the voracious reinterpreters cover include The Parliaments, The Cure, The Lovin' Spoonful, obscure alt-country-pop band Great Plains — and Yo La Tengo, whose 1995 “The Ballad of Red Buckets” gets a lovely, wistful reworking.
