This premier American rock band is just a "Use Somebody" away from reaching Kings of Leon heights. And on their fifth album, there are plenty of candidates here for that big hit -- try the gorgeous non-power ballad "Break Your Heart" or the heartland thrashers "Dark Places" and "Red Violins," which sound like The Killers stripped down. But there's also a surprising interest in serious hard rock, on "Stay Vicious," which betrays a Sabbath-goes-swamp-rock influence, and "1,000 Years," which does the same for Def Leppard. The best tunes here make it clear: We eagerly await their killer best-of.
