Fusing the slacker fuzz of Dinosaur Jr. and Nirvana with the cosmic drift harmonies of the Byrds, 1993's Thirteen isn't a sculpted pop statement like its insanely hyped predecessor, Bandwagonesque -- Teenage Fanclub sounds weary and ragged. But this only heightens the emotional stakes, especially when the band veers into the Gene Clark-inspired space country of "120 Mins," "Fear of Flying" and "Tears Are Cool." Thirteen isn't perfection, but it does contain the group's most real performances.
