The Arkansas Wild Man
Label: Charly Records
The topped-out exuberance of the best rockabilly comes charging out of the speakers on this collection of songs the pioneering rock-and-roller recorded for Sun in the late '50s. Best known for "Red Headed Woman" and "We Wanna Boogie," Burgess and his band never achieved any real chart success, but the famously unhinged energy of their live shows is evident in every boogie-ing breakdown and barely controlled guitar solo on these 25 a-whoopin'-and-a-hollerin' tracks. A straight line can be traced from here to the garage-rock explosion of the '90s (think Bassholes and Oblivians).
