The Sprawl (Live)
Label: Squeaky Squawk
On Confusion Is Sex, the Youth taught the underground how to make modern art-rock out of NYC No Wave and post-minimalist noise. Then, on EVOL and Sister, they flashed an occasional ability to write and carry a memorable tune. But Daydream Nation is where Thurston, Kim, Lee and Steve started bringing the grind and the hooks consistently. After opening with the sun-kissed "Teen Age Riot," most albums would have license to fall off. But not this one, which uses "Silver Rocket," "Hey Joni," "Eric’s Trip" and "Total Trash" to justify its double-album running time and reach for classic status.
