Neck of the Woods
Label: Dangerbird Records
"I've got one chance to move you," Brian Aubert murmurs on the slow-burning "Here We Are (Chancer)," and he takes that chance at a cautious pace on Silversun Pickups' third album, a hefty hour-long drama that builds and builds without ever quite hitting a climax -- but that's the point. It's all about creating tension without ever getting the satisfaction of relief. Here, they do that with fuzzed-out guitar exercises that are as proficient, meticulous and moody as ever. That sense of anxiety is enhanced even more so by jittery keyboard and drums on rockers like "Mean Spirits" and "Simmer."
