On “Tabernacle,” the opening track of Layers, Royce relates a fairly extraordinary tale: Over the course of one evening, his baby is born, his grandmother dies, and he performs a concert where he meets Eminem for the first time. It’s the latter association for which he’s best known, thanks to his sometimes reluctant role as Em’s right-hand man in the duo Bad Meets Evil (as well as one-fourth of the Slim Shady-sponsored crew Slaughterhouse). As a solo artist, Royce flows with bars, and it’s impressive to hear him zone out on “Hard” and “Shine.” He’s not as good at songwriting, although he tries to gird tracks like “Pray” with operatic tones, and his frequent comments about being “blackballed” early in his career aren’t that compelling anymore. He’s much better when he focuses on his craft, whether pairing with Rick Ross and Pusha T on “Layers” or working with Mr. Porter on “Gottaknow,” and telling us on the former how “mistakes turns to blessings.”
