Pop Evil is the band's heaviest album to date. The head-bashing power chords and chunky breakdowns that play supporting roles on previous efforts are now pushed to the forefront, giving these 11 tracks a dense, suffocating intensity. Imposing examples are "Colors Bleed" and "Art of War," sociopolitical anthems built from vicious, start/stop grooves reminiscent of vintage Rage Against the Machine. But the Michigan-bred crushers also embrace crusty, snarling electronics that lend the hit single "Waking Lions" a retro-nu metal vibe and "A Crime to Remember" a quasi-AWOLNATON sense of conquest. The only moment when Pop Evil doesn't feel like their looking to blow your doors off is the closing "Rewind," a sad-eyed power ballad on which the record's defiance dissolves into pain and regret.
