With its fourth album, George Clinton's swelling army of musicians exploded into popular consciousness. Mothership Connection converts James Brown's chicken-scratch R&B workouts into spacey electronic jazz and a cosmology exhorting liberation and cosmic freedom. There are no lyrics, and only shouted chants like "Swing low sweet chariot and let me ride" from the title track to guide us, but it's more than enough. Beyond the hits like "Give Up The Funk" and "P. Funk" lies "Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples," "Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication" and a half-hour of funk bliss.
