The Waterfall (Deluxe)
Label: ATO Records - My Morning Jacket
The purring synths that open The Waterfall's semi-title-track are mostly gone by the end of the song, making room for the vivid, rootsy guitar rock My Morning Jacket lives on. But those synths recur a few times, in sudden soaring blasts, because they sound nice. This band remains dedicated to the intense, intimately captured niceness of particular sounds: to "Compound Fracture"'s woo-oos, which have the same airy drift as its keyboards, to the ghostly wind-tunnel sound that gradually overcomes "Spring (Among the Living)" until it's driven away by a late-song cavalry of wailing guitars.
