To call Drones stripped down isn't necessarily accurate. The album -- a meditation on technological enslavement -- is still stuffed with an array of sounds and themes. Yet it certainly isn't as orchestral as Muse's last few titles. There's way more riffing (dig the futuristic blues-rockers "Psycho" and "The Handler") and way more heavy groovers ("Reapers" easily is the record's most fun cut). Teaming up with producer "Mutt" Lange was an ace move. The guy's unique knack for collage-like hard rock (see his seminal work with Def Leppard) obviously inspired Muse's sense of exploration.
