On Waves, Mick Jenkins emphasizes spiritual growth. He uses rap as a vehicle for self-acceptance and self-improvement on "Get Up Get Down" and "Alchemy," and states humbly on the latter, "Don't greet me as 'god'… n*gg* I ain't no deity." And like Chance the Rapper, he tends to luxuriate in the beat and harmonize, particularly on the sensuous boogie rhythm of "Your Love." Waves meanders a bit as Jenkins croons on too many tracks. It regains focus when he proves on "Ps & Qs" that he can spit as well as any new-school rapper.
