Cross the River on Your Own

"I know it's difficult," sings Jonas Bjerre on "Clinging to a Bad Dream," a chiming guitarscape gradually invaded by pounding drums -- but it isn't really. The track lengths on the Danish band's sixth album (four songs over six minutes; one over ten) may be within striking distance of the prog they've never quite been, but the distended melodies stay foregrounded and sticky-sweet. Sometimes Bjerre's clean, high, precise vocals suggest Northwestern U.S. indie rock, augmented with guitar heroics and a nifty approach to structure that sees the components of Mew's hooks disintegrate and reunite.
