Wish I Had Answered
After working with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy on several roots-leaning projects, the great Mavis Staples sets up shop with sometime Roots collaborator Son Little, who crafted two new compositions just for her on this atmospheric four-song EP. "I can tell you a story/ tell it simple and plain," she growls over swampy guitar. "Eve of destruction, but you talkin' free trade," she chides atop percussive shuffle. A quick Blind Lemon Jefferson cover and an infectious take on Pops Staples' "Wish I Had Answered" and it's over. She remains an American treasure, and you'll probably be left wanting more.
