Between Daylight and Dark
Label: Lost Highway Records
If you are the type whose eyes water easily to powerful songs, you may want to sit down before listening to Mary Gauthier's fifth album. Songs like "Thanksgiving" (a Tom Waits-esque narrative about visiting an inmate during the holidays) or the New Orleans/Katrina-themed "Can't Find The Way" are heart-wrenching Americana accounts of loss, hopelessness and clouds without silver linings. Throughout this romantically pastoral and beautifully bleak album, Gauthier's voice croons and cracks with the burning desperation of an aging Lucinda Williams who lost the key to her liquor cabinet.
