Liz Phair's run as a major-label babe has obviously not sat well with her. Five years after the lackluster Somebody's Miracle, Funstyle has her running in all directions. In all its wackiness, the album brings back Phair's rough and raw roots as an uninhibited songwriter even when she's rapping over smarmy music execs on "Bollywood," battling a self-help guru and annoying housewife on "Beat Is Up" and putting up every self-mocking defense on "U Hate It." Sometimes it feels like a midlife crisis caught on tape, sometimes it shows some interesting potential: "Bang! Bang!," "Oh, Bangladesh."
