Repeat After Me
Egomanic’s “Take It From Me” certainly is just as punchy as the Kongos’ megahit “Come With Me Now.” The band’s trademark kwaito thump is injected with extra doses of syncopation, while a psychedelic slide guitar is inserted at evocatively jarring intervals. These ear-grabbing eccentricities extend to the rest of Egomaniac, which features more collaboration and collective input than its predecessor, Lunatic. The upshot is an album, measured and engrossing, that’s perfect for watching neon-soaked sunsets on the beach as opposed to the poolside dance parties for which “Come With Me Now” would be a fitting soundtrack. And that’s just fine. It’s always more rewarding following bands that embrace evolution instead of those that simply recycle past successes.
