Little Drummer Boy/Silent Night/Auld Lang Syne
Label: Legacy Recordings
What an oddball collection of demos! The holiday material, tracks one and three, date back to an early-1970s recording date with Band of Gypsys. While not nearly as unbridled as the treatment of "The Star-Spangled Banner" the acid-rock legend unleashed at Woodstock, they're definitely soaked in some seriously fuzzy psych-blues. An outtake from the masterpiece that is Electric Ladyland, "Three Little Bears" is nothing more than Hendrix having some stoner fun in the studio. Its pop culture-laced wordplay is awfully reminiscent of Bob Dylan at his most irreverent, say "Motorpsycho Nightmare."
