Celebrated rapper-producer J Dilla recorded The Diary while he was briefly signed to MCA Records in the early 2000s. Much of its content has appeared in various forms -- “F*ck the Police,” a fantastic cop-funk 12-inch from 2001, is an underground classic. Collected together, these tracks underscore Dilla’s attempt at a mainstream rap album circa 2002. There are only a handful of particularly dated tracks, including “The Anthem”. “The Shining Pt. 2” and “Drive Me Wild” are sterling Detroit funk showcases, and “Fight Club” has a shoe-stomping beat that fits Dilla’s punchy, declamatory style of rap. “Gangster Boogie” is a G-funk party with Snoop Dogg, and we can tell that Snoop recorded his verse after Dilla’s 2006 death when he says, “I met Obama in some Snoop Dogg house shoes.”
