With the arrival of future metal icon Lemmy Kilmister on bass and less "jazzy" drummer Simon King, Hawkwind's sound became noticeably heavier with this 1972 album. Self-taught (with no previous experience), Kilmister adds a rough-edged chunkiness to the proceedings, not necessarily grounding the high-flying guitars of Dave Brock and tripped-out poetry of Michael Moorcock. It's more like everything gets a little messier. "Space Is Deep," "Brainstorm" and "Time We Left This World Today" are all definitive Hawkwind moments. "Space Is Deep," in particular, needs to be played very very loud.
