Faith No More have always been weirder and more satirical than the many alt metal, nü metal and rap rock acts they have inspired over the years. Sol Invictus, their first album in 18 years, proves that Mike Patton and company haven't lost this edge. The rockers ("Separation Anxiety," "Superhero," "Matador") unleash the same dark crunch that defines their best stuff (especially 1992's Angel Dust). As usual, Patton's lyrics are borderline inscrutable, yet on the truly absurd "Motherf*cker" his long-held disgust for American politics smacks listeners in the face like a giant cream pie.
