Eric Church has upped the volume with each album, so it’s a pleasant surprise he's taken it down a notch on Mr. Misunderstood. It still rocks, but it's more Mellencamp, less Metallica. The title track starts off with a lone acoustic guitar and goes nearly a full minute before other instruments join -- and 30 more seconds before drums kick in -- a kind of restraint Church isn't known for. The searing "Chattanooga Lucy" is a boogie-rock number that employs gospel-ish background singers for added punch, but it's the jaw-dropping "Mixed Drinks About Feelings" with Susan Tedeschi that’s the most impressive.
