This Head I Hold
Label: Downtown Records - Catalog
If the groovy swing of Electric Guest sounds familiar, that may be thanks to producer Danger Mouse, whose retro-psych-soul aesthetic guides this debut from the L.A. duo. And yes, it sounds suspiciously like Broken Bells in spots ("Under the Gun," "Awake," "American Daydream"), but its greatest moments come when singer Asa Taccone lets his easy-breezy falsetto fly, like on funkier fare "This Head I Hold" and "Waves." Like fellow Los Angelenos Fitz and the Tantrums, they work in bits of Motown flair, but they keep it mostly restrained in favor of more stoned-out jams ("Amber," "Troubleman").
