On the Border marks the beginning of the Eagles' pull away from their formative country rock sound. The twang can, of course, still be detected. After all, "Midnight Flyer" is one seriously awesome slice of progressive bluegrass (Bernie Leadon is such a fantastic banjo player). But the addition of third guitarist Don Felder was a sure sign the band was aching to beef up their rock a la Southern rebels Lynyrd Skynyrd. This really comes out on the radio smash "Already Gone," which is basically "Take It Easy" layered in crunchy riffage. It's one of the Eagles' all-time best tunes, too.
