English Oceans is a solid set of roots rock, almost humdrum in its straightforwardness. Absent are Southern Rock Opera's insights about race and class -- and the same goes for the group's prior forays into country soul (see The Big To-Do). Instead, the Truckers opt for a rock 'n' roll template dependent upon ragged intimacy and understated grooving. Several tracks, including "Hanging On," "When He's Gone" and "When Walter Went Crazy," even strike a melancholic tone, as if the band experienced a collective state of coming down during the album's recording.
