Label: Sugar Hill Records
Not only is Doyle Lawson gospel bluegrass' greatest living practitioner, his name is virtually synonymous with the genre. Heavenly Treasures, released on the Sugar Hill imprint in 1981, is one of Lawson's earliest stabs at an all-gospel-bluegrass album. Nevertheless, his sound is fully developed, with soaring harmonies, restrained soloing and subtle touches of country and Western. But ultimately it's those aforementioned harmonies that are the real treat: they are tight, impassioned and really quite glorious.
