Devendra Banhart's debut sounds like a collection of songs that were excavated from a wellspring of pathos and pie-eyed mysticism. But there's nothing too cosmic about this disc; it's remarkably grounded in the earth (songs about teeth, blood and bones). Banhart yelps and warbles and whispers into a four-track, sounding unhinged and brilliant all the while.
