Darkthrone move further away from the black metal for which they are best known with this 14th album, released in April 2010. Dropping the gurgling wraith-screech vocals and fluttering wall of guitar, the band has become more of a modern take on early Celtic Frost, albeit with far cleaner production values. That means punk and metal co-exist peacefully, and the vocals are manly, manly, manly. Fenriz and Nocturno Culto still have a knack for tossing in fat classic-rock riffs, though, as evidenced halfway through with "Running for Borders."
