When Was The Last Time
Label: Capitol Records Nashville
Leave it to the artist formerly known as Hootie to be country’s first superstar to open an album with an R.E.M. namedrop – in the title track of his fifth Nashville solo set, where he tries to teach a lady new tricks. From there, he embraces small-town Southern roots with a corduroy coziness in “Life’s Too Short,” “She,” and closing life’s lesson “Story To Tell.” But the collection peaks with decade-by-decade young-as-you-feel lookback “Twenty Something,” uncharacteristically raucous Drivin N Cryin cover and Jason Aldean/Luke Bryan/Charles Kelley summit “Straight to Hell,” irreverently honky-tonking rebound two-step “Count the Beers,” and smooth old-school soul crooner “Another Night With You” – four straight songs, right the middle.
