Somewhere Under Wonderland
Label: Counting Crows
Counting Crows have long struggled with balancing the demands of the adult alternative marketplace and the need to follow their not-so-commercial muse into the realm of '70s-inspired rock (a la Van, Joni and Neil). Recorded independently -- i.e., not on Capitol Records' dime -- Somewhere Under Wonderland finds the band following said muse more closely this time around. Opening with the eight-minute "Palisades Park" (interestingly, also the lead single), the fairly complex album winds its way through existential road songs, songs about America and songs about the romance of rock 'n' roll.
