Every Open Eye

Chvrches' debut The Bones of What You Believe was the sound of a band building their songs from scavenged parts of the '80s British synth-pop they loved, and Every Open Eye is the sound of a band that's been playing those songs to crowds. "Never Ending Circles" and "Playing Dead" pulse and stomp on arena scale; the ballad "Down Side of Me" might be slow and whispery, but it's built on the amplified trip-hop stutter of mid-'90s Garbage. The hooks aren't always as blissful as they should be, but when they are, as on exultant makeup anthem "Empty Threat," the album's a swooning rush.
