Signs To Lorelei
Label: Wichita Recordings
The second album from the most direct of the shoegaze revivalists submerges Nathan Hewitt's effect-glazed vocals in a bath of murky, brittle guitars and rustling drums. Like electronic density junkies and fellow Ride lovers M83, Cheatahs have a fondness for layering occluded monologues beneath climactic sections like the outro of "Red Lakes (Sternstunden)". On the best tracks ("In Flux," the thrashing "Deli Rome") the band's omnipresent wall of fuzz avoids monotony through the efforts of a sharp, varied rhythm section, guiding the songs from a muffled box.
