Chase Atlantic's debut album achieves that rare balance of sounding super poppy and catchy yet also utterly alien. Blending varying elements of hip-hop, EDM and rock, the ambitious Aussies ooze uniqueness. Where the syrupy "Triggered"--a sinister vision of betrayed love and cold-blooded murder--smothers the trio’s narcotic, slow-motion verses in gauzy trap production and head-swimming Auto-Tune, the funk guitar-laced ballad “Dancer in the Dark” finds common ground between '80s-kissed R&B (a quality that pops up a lot, as a matter of fact) and distorted bass lines shrouded in darkwave textures. Tying together the trio's thrillingly fractalized sound is their envelope-pushing lyrics, which come rooted in the kind of bad boy street culture that would feel right at home in a Harmony Korine film.
