No Pier Pressure
Label: Capitol Records (CAP)
After spending time exploring the work of composer George Gershwin, as well as paying tribute to the Disney songbook, Beach Boy great Brian Wilson returns with his first collection of new solo material in over a decade. The oddball dance-pop number "Runaway Dancer" notwithstanding, the bulk of the record is given over to sweetly sad and nostalgic songs about dreams dashed ("What Ever Happened"), the end of The Beach Boys ("The Last Song") and escapism ("Sail Away"). Cameos are everywhere, including Kacey Musgraves, She & Him, Mark Isham and old pals Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin.
