The Sound Of A Dry Martini
Label: Origin Records
Brent Jensen pays tribute to the alto sax deity Paul Desmond. Though Jensen can sound remarkably like Desmond, his take on songs like "Audrey" sidesteps some of the melancholy ache found in the original versions. That's not to say that Jensen doesn't play with emotion though and he also has some of Desmond's good humor. This makes for a fitting tribute, with Jensen focusing more on the solo sides that Desmond cut with guitarists Jim Hall and Ed Bickert than on his more famous work with Dave Brubeck. Listen to Paul Desmond's 1976 live album for a comparison. Then listen to Desmond's entire catalog, including everything he cut with Dave Brubeck.
