Catacombs Of The Black Vatican

On their ninth album, now with a drummer from Breaking Benjamin and rhythm guitarist from Lizzy Borden, ex-Ozzy axeman Zakk Wylde's bunch still makes hard rock for stuck-in-the-mud bikers. Forever frowning, hook-averse and boxed somewhere between Soundgarden plod and Alice In Chains slog, even when the tempo picks up briefly in "Heart of Darkness" and "Damn the Flood," they only turn bluesified enough to make Southern rock claims in a couple of power ballads. But only "Empty Promises" particularly distinguishes itself, by building a foreboding drum pattern toward passable Wylde detonations.
